Monday Morning Meme

1. What are the warning signs that you should leave a party? List the things that might make you head for the door. Drugs would make me head for the door, but there was a time that they wouldn't. So glad I have grown and changed. Of course, I don't want to be around underage drinking anymore either. I also don't want to be around people that are super stuffy and looking down on me.

2. You’re stuck on an island with plenty of food, a companion, and a relatively stress-free lifestyle. What do you say when the rescue ship comes? Explain your choice. I'd say, "Take me home!!!" Stress free is nice for a vacation, but I need to be around my friends and family...even if that can sometimes be stressful. Some stress is good stress!

3. Whom do you admire the most? In what way does that person inspire you? I admire my mom the most. She is a hard-working, loving, caring, kind, compassionate, and motivating woman. She comes over and helps me with my housework and my kids. She talks with me, laughs with me, and once in a while we even get to go out to Bingo. She is just an awesome person!

4. If, at birth, you could select the profession your child would eventually pursue, would you do so? Why or why not? If so, what profession would you choose? If not, what profession do you think your child might choose based on his/her current interests/personality? (If you don’t have children of your own, pick a child close to you, like a niece/nephew, for example). I wouldn't want to pick my kids' professions. My father tried to discourage me from doing what I really wanted to do, and it didn't go well for awhile there. Right now I think Ali might grow up to be a lawyer because she loves to argue, Josh could very well be a monster truck driver because he loved Monster Jam, and at this time Meghan seems to be leaning towards food thief. She loves to sneak snacks! Hopefully she outgrows that and just wants to be a chef and give food to others.

Banana Cream Brownie Dessert

Ingredients

1 pkg. brownie mix (13x9 inch pan size)
1 cup (6 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips, divided
3/4 cup dry-roasted peanuts, chopped and divided
3 medium firm bananas
1-2/3 cup cold milk
2 pkgs. (5.1 ounce) instant vanilla pudding mix
1 (8 ounce) carton cool whip

Directions

Prepare brownie batter according to package directions for fudge-like brownies, stir in 1/2 cup chocolate chips and 1/4 cup peanuts, spread into a greased 13 x 9 x 2 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 28-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near center comes out clean. Cool on wire rack.

Slice bananas, arrange in a single layer over brownies. Sprinkle 1/4 cup nuts and 1/4 cup chocolate chips over bananas.

In a bowl, beat milk and pudding mixes at low speed for 2 minutes. Fold in Cool Whip. Spread over top. Sprinkle with remaining chips and nuts.

Refrigerate leftovers.

Grilling Goodness

1. When you were in school, did you study hard or cram the night before? Generally I study a wee bit here and there, and I crammed hard the night before.

2. What can pull you out of a really funky mood? Sadly that would be shopping! Retail therapy almost always works for me.

3. Do you keep the invoice after you've paid the bill? Not unless I feel like I may need it in the future. I am a purger of papers, so it would have to be something big for me to keep the invoice.

4. Do you have yard sales? Shop at them? We have had one, and we plan to have another one this year. I have only recently become interested in having or shopping at them. I now realize that you really can find some cool stuff sometimes, and at a very reasonable price.

5. When was the last time you rode a rollercoaster? In November when we went to Disney World. So much fun!

6. Spring cleaning...do you do such things as wash your windows? Sometimes. Cleaning isn't a strength of mine....not even Spring cleaning. ;-)

7. How often do you clean out your refrigerator? I used to clean it out every week, but lately it has been more like once a month. Sad! I need to clean it out today actually. Who knows what I will find in there.

8. Have you ever been a victim of identity theft? No, praise God! I can imagine that would be a very frustrating and leave you feeling violated.

Food 4 Thought Friday

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
Breakfast ~When was the last time you did something for the first time? What was it? Well, I know this isn't exciting, but just this week was the first time that I made homemade snacks for my child to take to school. They generally can only take store bought stuff, but I got permission and was allowed to bring little cakes for Ali's birthday treat.

Lunch~What's your middle name? Why? Marie. It is also my mom's middle name, and now it is my oldest child's middle name.

Dinner ~What was the first car you drove? My cousin Joe's Trans Am. He was 16, but I was only 12, and he let me drive it in an empty parking lot. I was not a good driver! I love that memory though.
Midnight Snack~What is the strangest/weirdest gift you have ever received? I can't honestly think of anything that would qualify as strange or weird. I guess I have been pretty lucky.
Recipe of the Week (instead of your recipe for life what is it just for the week?)~~ Don't be lazy! I am trying really hard to stay focused and get things done.

Friday Fill-Ins

1. Apparently there's some sort of financial crisis going on. I think the problem is people want what they want when they want, and so they just go get it with credit cards or loans. I also think people want to do as little amount of work as possible, and they want to get paid a lot to do little. So, we should quit spending money we don't have, and quit being lazy, and I think we would solve our financial problems. Am I wrong?

2. Come on out and play sunny day.

3. 2009 hasn't been too shabby of a year so far.

4. I student taught, but that was it. Someday I hope to hold a paid position in a school. Since I am still paying on my student loan, I would like to feel like I contributed to paying it off.

5. For too long I've been fat, but what is a girl who loves food supposed to do?

6. I am not obsessed with the internet; I am not!

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to getting things ready for my daughter's birthday parties, tomorrow my plans include going to my daughter's roller skating birthday party, hopefully not breaking any bones, and coming home to work on her birthday cake for tomorrow and Sunday, I want to go to church, have Ali's family party at our house, get organized for next week, and relax!

My Ali Is 7!!

My big girl is 7 today! It doesn't seem possible. It feels like only a short while ago I woke up in the middle of the night with sharp pains. It feels like only moments have gone by since my dad laughed at me and told me that I didn't know what pain was, but he said I would find out soon. Sweet man! LOL!

Seven years have gone by though, and in that time, Ali has grown to be a sweet, caring, yet sassy little girl. She is head-strong, emotional, and dramatic. She may not be the physical spitting image of me, but she is probably the child that is most like me. God knows how much I love that little girl!

Here is a picture of her before she went off to school this morning. She is getting so big! She will go to her 7-year checkup on Monday, but I am pretty sure they will tell me that she is 4' 4" and about 70 pounds. Yikes!

I picked Josh up early from preschool, and we went over to Ali's school for snack time. We took kool-aid and little flower cakes, which I made yesterday. Aren't they cute? Ali loved them!

Josh and I left after snack time, but I surprised Ali and went back and picked her up at the end of the day, instead of letting her ride the bus. With me I had a cute bouquet of flowers for her, and I put a card with them. The card read, 'Ali, I love you more than you love me. Never doubt that! Mommy' She and I always have contests to see who loves each other the most, and I always pretend she wins to make her happy, but I wanted her to know that I truly do love her more than she loves me. I win! ;-) Anyway, we put her flowers in her room, so that she can enjoy them. She even said that she will look at them when she is going to sleep. Here is a picture of them.

The night isn't over! She still gets to eat the meal she picked...tacos, and she gets to eat it on our Celebrate plate. Plus, she is a lucky girl because she gets a birthday party on Saturday (with her friends) and sunday (with family). Remember when birthdays were such a big deal? I love making them super special for my kids, and I hope someday their spouses will do the same.

Tasty Thursday~Pork Steaks

I made this recipe on Tuesday, and it was very tasty. It is super easy to make, extremely tender, and makes your whole house smell delicious. I served it with some Uncle Ben's Mushroom Rice, which went well with this main dish.

Pork Steak

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
4 pork steaks
salt and pepper, to taste
garlic powder, to taste
1 large onion, chopped
1 cup fresh mushrooms, sliced
2 (10 3/4 ounce) cans cream of mushroom soup
1 3/4 cups water
1 (1 ounce) package dry onion soup mix
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Heat oil in skillet over medium-high heat. Season steaks with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Brown steaks on each side. Transfer steaks to a 9 x 13 inch pan.

Saute the onions and muchrooms in the same skillet, once you take the steaks out. Add water, Worcestershire sauce, dry onion soup mix, and mushroom soup. Mix this together until a sauce forms.

Pour sauce over steaks. Cover pan with aluminum foil. Bake in the preheated oven for 90 minutes.

Thursday Thirteen~Letter M

13 Things About Me (& My Family) Beginning with the Letter 'M.'

1. Mamook~This is what my kids call my mom. Ali started calling her this when she was just a little thing, and we haven't stopped since. I think it is pretty cool myself, and I know my Mamook enjoys it too.

2. Meghan~She is my third child, and she is my second girl. She actually completes our family, because I had my tubes tied during my cesarean section. She is a spunky, but fun, 2 year old. Here is a picture of her before she even came home from the hospital. Wasn't she precious?

Here is a recent video I took of the little cutie pie...

video

3. Morel Mushrooms
~Every spring Jeff goes mushroom hunting, and now he takes our two oldest kids with him. This weekend he will actually be taking them, and someday soon he will be taking all three. I don't join in for a couple reasons. #1--I don't enjoy looking for tiny mushrooms in large wooded areas...it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack #2--I don't enjoy eating them, so therefore, I don't enjoy hunting them. ;-) I am just not the outdoorsy person that my hubby is, and that is quite alright.

4. Medium~I love this show! It's one of my weekly must-see shows.

5. Moccasin~I went to my senior prom in a t-shirt, shorts and moccasins. Why you ask? Well, because I had graduated early, so I technically was not allowed to attend my prom unless I went with a current Junior or Senior. Since that wouldn't fly with my boyfriend at the time, we went for a little bit to see who got Prom King & Queen. I obviously didn't get all dolled up for that.

6. Motor~The motor in my first car, a 1984 Chevy Cavalier Convertible, blew up. Apparently you have to put oil in the engine. Who knew?

7. Middle Finger~My son, Josh, always points to things with his middle finger. This is especially bad when he is pointing to something in the sky. I have tried to explain to him that he has a pointer finger for a reason, but he just doesn't seem to want to change.

8. Magnolia~We have a magnolia tree in our front yard. It was actually gift from some of my friends when my dad passed away. Very kind of them! Here is a picture of my daughter, Ali, peeking at us from behind the magnolia tree.

9. Maid of Honor & Matron of Honor~I had both. My friend Betsy (to the left of me in the photo) was my Matron of Honor, and my friend Stacey (to the right of me in the photo) was my Maid of Honor. That was all I had...no bridesmaids. It was a small, but beautiful, wedding.

And here is a bonus M....Jeff and I went to Mackinac Island for our honeymoon. Here is the view from our hotel room. Beautiful!

10. Meat~The deep-freezer in our garage is full of meat. We have both beef and pork in there. I honestly don't think we can fit much more in there. We are set in the meat department!

11. Milk~My daughter, Ali, will only drink white milk, and my son, Josh, will only drink chocolate milk. Meghan prefers chocolate milk, but she will drink either. Crazy kids!

12. Mailbox~I would like a new one. There isn't anything wrong with ours. It's just a basic black metal mailbox on a wood post, but someday I would like to get something a little more decorative. Maybe something like the one below.

13. Mouse~We have a darn mouse living in our pantry. Heck, we may have mice for all I know. What I do know is that this mouse is smart. He hasn't fallen for any of the poison or traps that we have set out for him. Oh no, he is not your average mouse! I think we may have a Super Mouse in our house. Maybe it is Mighty Mouse.
By the way, when I was a kid, I had a Mighty Mouse doll, and I slept with him quite a bit.
Here is proof...

Join in on Thursday Thirteen, and don't forget to check back next week when I look at the letter 'N'...it should be a nifty time! ;-)

I won't lie. My mom did help me with bathrooms. She is such a big help, and she knows how much I detest cleaning bathrooms. Anyway, I was just so proud of myself for sticking to a schedule, and feeling a sense of order in the process. I didn't feel rushed or chaotic.

Today is a whole different story though. I don't feel motivated at all. I keep looking at my to-do list thinking, "I can start later." In reality I can't start much later if I plan to get everything done. It's like there is an inner battle going on inside of me, and the lazy one always seems to beat out the organized and tidy one. Not today darn it! Off I go to tackle this...

Birthday Invite

I just have to share the invitation that I made for Ali's roller skating birthday party. Of course, I had to white out some personal information, which makes it look a little crummy, but you get the idea. Isn't it cute?

We sent it out to all the girls in her class, plus a few extra friends. I think they are going to have a great time!

Wordless Wednesday

It's 2:30 in the morning. Do you know where your children are? I didn't! I noticed our bathroom light was on, and then I checked in on my oldest child. She wasn't in her bed. Did I panic? Only for a second! I peeked across the hall, and this is what I found...

Isn't that the sweetest thing? Apparently she got a little lonely and decided to go sleep with her little brother. Not only that, she also seemed to get bored, and she took her Leapster and games too. Crazy kid! I love that little Sassy Frass!

Heads or Tails

The theme/prompt for today, April 21, is:

TAILS - "Once upon a time"

Once upon a time, not so very long ago, there was a young girl who desperately wanted to be loved. She looked high, she looked low, but she never found her true love. Then one night the young girl went out partying with some friends. She was wild and crazy, but she was still desperately looking for someone to settle down with. That evening, after a long night of drinking (far too much for her own good), she passed out fell asleep on her living room floor between two of her friends. Both of these friends happened to be guys. One she had known for 7 years, and the other she had known for over a year. They were her buddies! She woke up in the morning holding the hand of the friend she had known for a little over a year. She thought to herself, "This feels nice!" She realized that love might just have been in front of her for quite a while, but she also realized that if she were wrong, she could ruin a friendship and feel humiliated. So, she chose not to act on her feelings. Several months later, these two young people finally admitted that they both liked each other. That was the start of a beautiful relationship. They married two and a half years later. They created three beautiful children together. Their story is far from over. In fact, it is still in the early stages, hopefully. ;-)

Monday Morning Meme

1. Would you rather be extremely successful professionally and have a tolerable yet exciting private life, or have an extremely happy private life and only a tolerable and uninspiring professional life? Explain your answer, please. I would rather have an extremely happy private life and only a tolerable and uninspiring professional life. I suppose I feel this way because my private life is what I consider my professional life, but many others would say that I am not a "professional", since I am not using my teaching degree. I would rather be happy with my kids, hubby, other family and friends, than be super successful in a career.

2. What are you doing to help the environment? Tell us how you cut down on your environmental impact. Not enough! There I admitted it. I don't recycle cans. I don't have a hybrid vehicle. I'm not using geothermal heat or solar panels. I am, however, slowly changing over some of my light bulbs. It's a start!

3. Who would you not mind being stuck in an elevator with? Someone who’s handy could help get you out. Someone hot could help pass the time. List who’s in there with you. Hmmmm? I think I would like to be stuck in there with my hubby. He works a ton, so we haven't gotten a lot of alone time lately. He isn't handy with elevators, so I am pretty sure we would be stuck in there for awhile. I could actually get him to talk with me about more than just the weather or politics, which irritate him, and I am sure we could find some other "non-verbal" ways to pass the time. ;-)

4. How often does your family have their portrait taken? Is it professionally done? If possible, post your last family portrait. Now that I’ve got you thinking about it, when do you plan on having your next family portrait taken? We have never had a professional portrait taken of all of us, but we do have professional portraits taken of the kids together. Of course, I haven't had this done since May of 2006. Yikes! I really need to have one taken of all of them in their Easter outfits. Here are some of the ones from the last time. The kids sure have changed a ton!

Organization...Or Lack Thereof

I just spent today organizing my menu for next week, making a grocery list, and then making a daily to-do list for each day next week. This is all great. It makes me sound organized doesn't it? I want to be organized. Inside of me is an organized neat-freak. The problem is that organized person gets taken over by the lazy person inside of me. The lazy person seems to be the stronger person.

I don't want it to be this way, but it is this way, so I try hard to fix this. How do I try to fix this? By doing what I did today. Getting prepared, making lists, and trying to organize a plan that seems reasonable. I pray that I can stay on top of my to-do list this week. Day 1 doesn't look so bad...

I think I can do that. Don't you think I can? I just need to discipline myself. I need to quit wasting so much time on the computer and the telephone.

Do any of you have this same struggle? Being a stay-at-home mom is great, but it also means that I have to structure my own time. When I had a job outside of the home, I felt so much more organized. I am not disciplined by a boss. My day isn't over at a certain time. Plus, it wasn't as easy to get distracted by other things when I worked outside of the home. Heck, I was always afraid I would get fired. Now, I don't have that fear. This job is the only one that has ever taken me this long to adjust to. Seven years later, I am still struggling. Please tell me that I will get the hang of this soon!

Saturday Special Meme

~One Word To Start A Sentence Or Statement~
~Fill In The Blanks~

1. Goodbye is a word that I have had to say often in my life, and it is always sad to leave close friends and loved ones.

2. Saturday is a day for running errands and relaxing. Can you really do both in one day?

3. Special friends make life much more enjoyable.

4. Memes are lots of fun to do, and I am sad that Saturday Special Meme will no longer be played.

Food 4 Thought Friday

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
Breakfast ~When you need alone time do you have a favorite spot you like to go to? I love to go out to lunch by myself, when I need time alone, and I also like to go to our local library. Both of those relax me quite a bit.

Lunch~What is your favorite GUM, STORE BOUGHT COOKIE, and SALTY SNACK

Okay, I admit that I am not a huge gum chewer, but just the other day I was craving some Fruit Stripe gum. I used to love that stuff when I was a kid. I would give anything for some right now. ;-)
As for my favorite store bought cookies, I really like the Keebler Fudge Stripes the best, but I also love the E.L. Fudge cookies. Those are the ones that are shaped like the elves. I can eat a whole bag of those without thinking. Not a good thing!
I love salty snacks! I love salt & vinegar chips, cheddar & sour cream chips and movie popcorn, but I really love Gardetto's. They are salty, garlicky goodness!

Dinner~Do you speak any other languages? I took Spanish in junior high, high school, and college, but that still doesn't mean I can speak Spanish. I suppose it would be fair to say that I can speak a "minimal amount" of Spanish.

Midnight Snack~Have you ever been on TV? Not that I know of.

Recipe of the Week (instead of your recipe for life what is it just for the week?) Well, my kids have been on Spring Break, so my recipe has been to let them have fun! They have played outside a ton, and we even got to go to a park with friends today.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

Grilling Goodness

1. Do you prefer reality tv or dramas or comedies? I'm not a huge reality tv fan, but I love both dramas and comedies. If I had to pick one, I would probably pick drama. I suppose a girl has to have a little drama in her life after all. ;-)

2. If you could have free cosmetic surgery, what would you have done? Does Lasik eye surgery count? If I wasn't so afraid of the laser near the eye, that is what I would go for.

3. What are you itching to get but you have not 'bitten the bullet'? Well, I am a shopper, so when I want something I get it....usually. However, I have been wanting a new mailbox for awhile now, but I haven't yet taken the plunge. I can't decide what kind I want exactly. I need to do some research online. Any suggestions?

4. Do you have a bad habit that you hope your children don't pick up? Shopping! Don't get me wrong, I don't mind if my kids like to shop, but I don't want them to shop for theraputic reasons like I do. I shop when I am mad, sad, or happy. Heck, I eat at the same times too. It's just not healthy!

5. What was your favorite meal growing up? Grilled cheese and tomato soup...seriously! I not only wanted my mom to make it for me all the time, but I also ordered it everytime I went out to eat. I still love it, but not as much as I once did.

6. What meal did you have as a youngster that you don't have as an adult? I actually cook a lot of the same things my mom made when I was a kid. The only thing I can think that I will never serve is beets, and that isn't exactly a whole meal. My mom is an awesome cook, so I couldn't complain too much.

7. What is your earliest memory of a "vacation"? Where'd you go? The only vacations I ever remember were to Chicago to visit family or to Toledo to visit family. I'm taking my kids to Toledo this summer to visit family. History repeats itself. ;-)

8. What was the "Best Thing" you ever got for Christmas, before age 12? Oh goodness! I can't choose. I got a Cabbage Patch Kid the year that they came out, which I later learned my parents had to pay big bucks for. I also loved the Show 'N Tell I got when I was 4 or 5. It was awesome! Are you familiar with that toy? It looked like this...

You could watch slideshows on it, and they were narrated by the record. I could sit and watch this for hours. So much fun!

Friday Fill-Ins

1. Join me in thanking Jesus for all He has done for us.

2. Put a little joy in your day!

3. Happiness is the one thing that will keep you sane. Trust me, I know! ;-)

4. Discombobulated and confused.

5. I'm waiting for my hubby to get home. He went out for drinks with his dad after work.

6. Pepsi is hard to resist. So are brownies, chips & guacamole, and Gardettos. Can you tell I am hungry???

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to going to a Vacation Bible School decorating meeting at our church, tomorrow my plans include getting organized for next week and my daughter is having a friend stay the night, so we will probably have movie night and Sunday, I want to go to church, relax, and enjoy the day!

Tasty Thursday~Taco Salad

Tasty Thursday is back!!! Trista took a little hiatus from hosting this wonderful meme, but she has revived it, and I am thrilled. This meme is a great way to get "tried and true" recipes. I hope you will play along too, and share your tasty treats. We know I am always on the lookout for good recipes. ;-)

Today I am going to share one that I have been craving for a while now. I think it has something to do with the warmer weather we have been witnessing. This is a meal I remember eating when I was younger, but it was mostly served during the warmer months. I hope you will give it a try and enjoy! :-)

Taco Salad

Ingredients

1 lb. ground beef or turkey
1 package taco seasoning
1 cup water
1 head lettuce
1 tomato, chopped
1 cup grated cheddar cheese
1 package of Doritos
1 bottle french dressing

Directions

Brown meat and drain. Add taco seasoning and water. Simmer for 15 to 20 minutes and then let it cool.

Break lettuce into a salad bowl, add tomatoes and cheese. Just before serving add meat, Doritos, and dressing.

Thursday Thirteen~Letter L

13 Things About Me (& My Family) Beginning with the Letter 'L.'

1. Left Handed~My parents were both lefties, but I am a definite righty. I can hardly do anything with my left hand. My hubby is also right handed, and it looks like all of our kids are too. It always amazes me when I think about how certain genetic things are passed on...or not passed on in this case.

2. Lampe Berger~I am in love with Lampe Bergers! They have three functions: 1. to clean the air by eliminating bad odors 2. to fill the air with a wonderful fragrance 3. to look pretty...of course! I have three of them, but I wouldn't mind having one for every room someday.

Here is the first one I got. It is in my living room, and I usually keep it filled with a scent called Ocean Breeze, which has a woody and fruity scent. It just smells so clean to me.
This next one is my Monet one, which I adore, since I am a huge Monet fan. I usually keep this one filled with a fruity scent, since it hangs out in the dining room. Right now it is filled with green apple, which just smells delightful.
My third, and final one (so far!), resides on the dresser in my bedroom. It is also filled with Ocean Breeze, but I would be willing to switch it out, if I could find a scent that better suits the bedroom.

3. Lake~Jeff proposed to me at Little Grassy Lake in Carbondale, IL. It was Labor Day weekend, and we had just gotten done eating pizza at a restaurant we both liked. He gave me a rose, and he asked me to be his "wife, lover & friend forever." How could I say no to that?

4. Lighting~Theater was my minor in college, and one of the classes I took was all about stage lighting. It's probably information that I will never use again, but the class was fun.

5. Larkspur~My birthday is in July, and the July flower of the month is Larkspur. I recently realized that my favorite flower, which is called Delphinium, is pretty much the same thing as Larkspur. How cool is that? I need to plant some. Look how pretty it is...

6. Lemonade~Well, in this case the lemonade I am going to talk about is actually Strawberry Lemonade. It is so delicious, y'all!! I made it last year for a Pampered Chef party I hosted, and I instantly fell in love. Here is the recipe...

Strawberry Lemonade

Ingredients

2 cups water
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon grated lemon peel
1 cup fresh lemon juice
1 pint fresh strawberries, hulled and halved
2 cups cold sparkling water or club soda
Ice

Directions

In a medium saucepan, bring the water and sugar to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves. Add the lemon peel and lemon juice, stir, and remove from the heat. Let cool completely, then strain into a clean pitcher.

In a blender, puree the pint of strawberries and add to the pitcher with the lemon juice. Stir well to combine and refrigerate until well chilled.

Add the sparkling water/club soda and stir well. Pour over glasses filled with ice and serve, garnish with mint sprigs and strawberries, if desired.

Makes 4-6 servings

**Thoughts~Strain strawberries after you puree them, otherwise you are left with a whole lot of seeds. Plan on this making only 4 servings. Also, you don't have to use fresh lemon juice.**

7. Lodge~
A place that I used to love to go to back when I lived in southern Illinois was Giant City Lodge. Giant City State Park is absolutely beautiful, and the Lodge was built on the highest point in the park. There is a lot of history and beauty there, which you can enjoy while you eat a delicious family style fried chicken dinner.

Here is a picture of the outside of the Lodge.

This is a portion of the interior.

And this is the observation water tower that is right outside of the Lodge. You witness an amazing view from way up here!

8. Lazy~This is something that I can be quite often. I can especially be lazy in regards to things I don't want to do....cleaning for example. I'm not completely lazy. I mean I do lots and lots of good things, but there are just some areas that I prefer to be lazy. I'm bad!

9. Lullaby~Almost every night I sing Meghan a couple of lullabies. Sometimes she falls asleep while I sing, like last night, but most nights she sings along with me and pokes at my face. She is too cute!

10. Latin~Jeffrey took Latin in high school. I always thought that was interesting, since that wasn't even an option at the high schools I attended.

11. Lightning McQueen~Josh wanted a Cars birthday party for his 3rd birthday, and here is the cake I made for him.

I love making the cakes for my kids' birthdays. Ali's birthday is next week, and somehow I have to pull off a Camp Rock cake. If all goes as planned, I should have a cake that looks like a guitar, or a cake that at least has a guitar on it somewhere.

12. Logan James~That is what I wanted to name Meghan, if she had been a boy. Logan was picked simply because we liked it, but James was picked primarily because it is my father-in-law's name. I think it is a strong name that goes well with Logan. Looks like we will never have a little Logan James in our family, but we are quite pleased with our little Meghan Rose.

13. License~I flunked the driver's license test the first time around. The lady said I ran a red light, but I completely disagree with her. She must have been blind as a bat! I was so angry that I threw my keys at my mom when I got back into the building. What a brat I was! Oh well, I passed the second time. The guy that took me that time was very nice.

Join in on Thursday Thirteen, and don't forget to check back next week when I look at the letter 'M'...it should be a marvelous time! ;-)

Cool New Book

If you know me at all, you know that the book pictured above is my kind of thing. I love celebrating quirky holidays, and I love learning what happened on a certain day. Above all that, I love God. Listen to what the back of this book has to say, and you will know why '365 Trivia Twist Devotions: An Almanac of Fun Facts and Spiritual Truth for Every Day of the Year' is now my most favorite book ever...

"Did you know...
  • February 9 was the day volleyball was invented?
  • June 7 is National Chocolate Ice Cream Day?
  • October 8 is Fluffernutter Day?
Explore a world of amazing trivia and exciting spiritual truths with 365 Trivia Twist Devotions.

Each daily devotion is based on a historical happening, intriguing invention, or offbeat holiday associated with that calendar day. Everything from George Washington's birthday to National Waffle Day is used to reveal the truths of God's Word in a fun new way. Special activities, Bible verses, and additional fun facts help to give every day of the year its own unique trivia twist."

Super Duper Fun!!! Since today is Income Tax Day, that is what is discussed on the page for April 15th. It talks a little bit about what taxes are, and then it discusses how the people of Jesus' day didn't like paying taxes, since they lived under a foreign power. Luke 20:25 is discussed a bit. It also goes on to tell a few other things that happened on this day in history, which include Leonardo da Vinci being born, Titanic sinking, and Abraham Lincoln being shot. On each page there is a 'To Do' section, and today it tells the kids to ask a parent to explain how taxes work and what it means to be a good citizen.

I just had to share this book with you all, because I think it is a fun and interesting way to teach God's word. I am looking forward to using this book with my kids!

Our New Playset

The guys that built the kids' playset got it completed later last night. So, today was the first day they got to play on it. Here are the one million pictures I took of them. Can you tell we are all excited!?!?

Thank you Mamook for this wonderfully generous gift! You rock!!

As usual, my Wordless Wednesday is not so wordless....This is Meghan enjoying her brand new Viper. Doesn't she look thrilled?

Heads Or Tails

This week it is...HEADS - "Reason"

Well, last week it was "List three" and I gave you three reasons I was looking forward to summer. I don't suppose I can do that one again, eh? Well, alright, I suppose I will tell you five reasons I love my life.

1. I have a hard working husband. He provides well so that I can stay at home with the kids.

2. I have three wonderful children.

3. I am the daughter of a wonderful woman who helps me out a ton.

4. I have a wonderful church family.

5. I am blessed to have many terrific friends.

Sometimes it helps me to focus on what I do love about my life, because I can often get depressed about the things that aren't going quite right. For instance, my husband is so hard working that he often isn't home, which is hard on me and the kids. However, if I choose to think about it that way, I will just get dragged down. I believe positive thinking helps out a ton in life. It really is how you look at things, and I choose to have a 'the glass is half-full' outlook.

How about you? Share with me a few reasons you love your life. I would love to hear them!

Now, let me leave you with this...Nat King Cole singing 'I Love You For Sentimental Reasons.'

A Wonderful Easter

We had a wonderful Easter! The kids woke up to find that the Easter Bunny had, indeed, arrived at our home sometime in the night. Of course, Ali now knows that there is no such thing as the Easter Bunny, but she played along quite well.

She was very excited with the things that she received. She got this Bolt movie, a couple of electronic games, a certificate to download something from ITunes, Berenstein Bears book, and candy.

Meghan liked her kaleidoscope that she received. She also got some sidewalk chalk, bottles & diapers for her babies, a Wonder Pets book, Word World movie, and candy.

Here is Josh showing off one of the five monster trucks he received. He was in heaven! He also got a Transformer book, Hot Wheels movie, and candy.

The kids got to play with their goodies some. I made cinnamon rolls for breakfast. Not from scratch. Just the Pillsbury refrigerated kind. I also had to fix the broccoli salad for Easter dinner, and get myself ready, as well as three kids. Thankfully my mom showed up early and helped get the kids ready. What a lifesaver!

After all that rushing around, we went to church, and amazingly enough we arrived early. Here is my mom and Ali before the service started.

Here are Jeff and Josh beforehand. They had childcare for Meghan, which was a huge relief. I was worried that Josh wouldn't behave well, but he surprised us all. He was such a good boy, and he made his momma proud!

After church, Meghan drove home. Okay, she didn't drive all the way home. We only let her drive down our street. No major roads for her...until next year. ;-)

When we got home, my mom took pictures of the kids outside, while I worked on getting the glazed baby carrots ready. She got some good shots. Don't you agree?

When they came inside, I forced them to take a few more. What can I say? I love capturing things on film. (Side note...can I still say that, if I technically take digital pics? Hmmm?)

I also got my treats ready to take over to Jeff's sister's house. Don't you just love this plate? I bought it at Hearts at Home in March, and I think it is the best thing ever. You can change the ribbon, and you can write on the plate with Sharpie markers. The marker comes off with fingernail polish remover. So, here is how I dressed it up...

and here is how I dressed it up with my goodies. I will have to say that the chocolate covered peanut butter eggs were not as good as expected. Next year I will use milk chocolate to cover them, instead of the bittersweet dark chocolate that the recipe called for. Then I will enjoy them more.

Finally, it was time to head over to my sister-in-law and brother-in-law's home. Jeff's grandma used to host Easter, but Abby took it over about 3 or 4 years ago. Here is a picture of her super cute kids, Gavin and Emma.

Being the picture person that I am, I had to get a couple family shots. Here is Jeff's parents with all the grandkids that were there. They have two other grandkids, Cole and Madison, but they live in Ohio and weren't able to be here. Maybe they can make it next year!

Then I got a shot of Jeff's grandparent's with the kids, but Gavin had already snuck away. He was being a picture fuddy duddy yesterday. Must be his age. Maybe 9-year-old boys are too cool to have their picture taken.

The girls finally got to change out of their Easter outfits, and then dinner was served. We had ham, lasagna, rolls, potato salad, broccoli salad, glazed baby carrots, and baked beans. For dessert we had peach pie and baklava.

After dinner, the kids got to play, and the adults got to talk. That is my favorite time! I love chatting with the family, and learning what has been happening in everyone's life. The kids get along so well together, so it makes it that much more enjoyable. :-)

Meggie is such a ham! She was lovin' having daddy push her in this swing.

Abby always puts together a pretty big Easter egg hunt for the kids. She has a big yard, so it is the perfect spot for one. There were tons of eggs to hunt! The kids were anxiously waiting for the hunt, and they were quite pleased when it finally took place. Meghan wasn't sure what to do at first. Well, she saw an egg open, and knew enough to put the candy in her bag, but she didn't know she was supposed to pick up the eggs too. She caught on quickly though.

Ali and Gavin had no problems figuring out what to do. They were old pros, and probably the most competitive.

Josh enjoyed himself, and I enjoyed watching him in his cool new hat that the Easter bunny left for him at Aunt Abby's. Each of the kids got a basket filled with cool things. Josh's had all army stuff, Meg's had a stuffed bunny & pinwheel, and Ali's had a cheerleading Barbie doll with some cheer stuff. Of course, they all got candy too. What are we going to do with all this candy???

Emma enjoyed the egg hunt too, but she wanted her mom to do it with her. Abby obliged her.

When we got back inside, the kids enjoyed checking out their loot. More candy of course!

Josh thought it was cool that some of the Easter eggs looked like dinosaurs. Aunt Abby had some plain ones, dinosaur ones, fairy ones, Dora ones, and I think sports ones. Meggie loved the Dora ones.

The kids got to play outside again.

And I forced them to get their picture taken again. We had to take this shot three times before Josh would smile. I think he was tired of picture taking.

Emma never has a problem smiling though. She is just too cute!

The kids even talked me into getting on the trampoline. I was out of breath in 2.2 seconds, and I think that was mostly because I was laughing so hard. When I first got on, I was jumping around and yelling, "I feel like a kid again!!" It was a blast!

All the fun had to come to an end. Or did it?? Nope! We took Emma home with us, and the kids got to play outside some more. Then they came in, ate dinner, and we watched Bolt together.

It was cute seeing Emma & Ali all snuggled up in Jeff's chair together.

Of course, I got to snuggle with a cutie patootie myself!

All in all, it was a wonderful Easter. Good church service, good family time, and good food....You can't ask for more than that! I hope all of you had an Easter that was just as wonderful!

Monday Morning Meme

1. How long have you been blogging? Who is your target audience? How often, if at all, do you think about quitting or taking an extended break? What do you do when you start feeling burned out with blogging? I have been blogging for about a year and a half. I would have to say my target audience is family and friends, as well as wives, mothers & Christian women that I have never met. I love knowing that those I know read my blog to see what is going on in our lives, but I also love that I get to meet people that I may otherwise never get a chance to meet. I can't say that I have ever thought about quitting blogging, but I have taken several breaks. It's what I do when I am burned out with blogging. I am just coming off of one of those breaks. It wasn't an intentional break. It was more of a 'I can't find the time for one more thing' kind of break. I always miss blogging though, so I keep coming back!

2. What’s on your mind now? Currently on my mind is that my house looks like a tornado swept through each room. Also, I am wondering if it is going to rain tomorrow, because if not, our playset is being built. Bigger, more pressing, things on my mind are my husband's salvation, money because of my stinkin' credit card, and planning Ali's birthday party.

3. If you were able to live to the age of 90 and retain either the body or the mind of a 30-year old for the last 60 years of your life, which would you want? Explain your answer, please. Oh, this is tough! Part of me thinks having the mind of a 30-year-old would be great. But if my body is 90 and my mind is 30, would I wind up going insane? I mean what if I was seriously ill physically and stuck in bed all the time. My mind would be bored! If I have the body of a 30-year-old and the mind of a 90-year-old, I would physically be able to do more, but my mind might, or might not, want to. Hmmm? I think I will go with the body of a 30-year-old. Did all that make sense? LOL!

4. What would you constitute a “perfect” evening for you? For starters, the kids would eat the dinner I cooked them, even if it was liver and onions, without any complaints. They might even ask for seconds. Oh, and Jeff would actually be home for dinner. He would tell us a funny story that happened to him at work that day. After dinner, the kids would play quietly and nicely together until bedtime, and Jeff and I would have some time alone to talk and watch tv. Then at bedtime the kids would listen when I told them to put their jammies on, brush their teeth and go potty. They would never once tell me that they are not tired. Jeff would help me tuck all the kids in bed. After the kids are in bed, Jeff and I would snuggle up together and watch a movie. We would go to bed together at the same time, and I won't say anymore about that. ;-) I don't think my "perfect" evening is too much to ask for. Is it???

Happy Easter

Today is a day to celebrate the wonderful gift that we have all been given. Three days prior to this one, on Good Friday, Jesus was arrested, tried, crucified, and buried. However, he rose three days later, which must have left Satan angry.

He did all of this for each of us, so that our sin's may be forgiven. On this day, thousands of years ago, He rose from the dead declaring victory over sin and death. Satan does not stand a chance against the risen son. Through Him we can have this victory.

How you ask? By faith. By believing in Jesus Christ. By putting your trust in Him. Once you do this, your life will change. Sometimes it changes gradually, and sometimes the changes are immediate, but I promise you their will be a change, if you truly believe and trust.

I pray that each and every one of you already does, or soon will, believe in and trust in Him. I pray that each of you can experience the freedom that I now feel. His horrible experience on that cross, has a way to free us from things we never thought possible.

Thank you God for sending your son to save each and every one of us. Thank you Jesus for fulfilling the prophecies of scripture. Thank you for being a savior to all. You are my hero!

Happy Easter!!

The Saturday Special

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~One Word To Start A Sentence Or Statement~
~Fill In The Blanks~
1. Celebrate Easter thinking about how much Jesus went through for each and every one of us.
2. Easter is a time of hope and new life.
3. With all that in mind, what is one thing you can do for Jesus?
4. Family would be the perfect people to share any changes you wish to make. Hopefully they will be supportive. Since you all are my bloggy family, I will share my plans with you. I plan to spend more quality time with Jesus. I need to pray more, and have some time with Him each day. This has always been a priority that gets put on the back burner. I need to stop doing that!
Food 4 Thought Friday
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
Breakfast~How are you going to celebrate Easter this year? Well, we will get up to kids all excited about the Easter Bunny having arrived at our home while they were sleeping. Then we will eat cinnamon rolls for breakfast. After that, my mom, my three kids, my hubby and myself are all going to go to church. Then we will head over to Jeff's sister's house for an Easter egg hunt and lunch. We will chat with all the family, possibly play a game, and be thankful for all that Jesus did for us...and still does!
Lunch~What is your favorite Easter tradition either currently or as a child? We always color eggs, which I think is pretty fun. As a child, we never went to church, but we are trying to make that a tradition for our family now. This will actually be our first year going to church as a family on Easter Sunday. It always seemed so difficult in the past to get the kids ready, go to church, and then get to lunch. It still seems difficult, but I am not letting that stop me anymore!
Dinner ~What is your favorite Easter treat? Well, we always have ham, which I love. Plus, we usually get to eat yummy deviled eggs. This year I am making a couple side dishes I love, as well as a new treat to try. You can view those here.
Midnight Snack~What does Easter mean to you? It means that I will always be forgiven for my sins. Jesus cared so much about each and every one of us, that he died a brutal death. It also means new life, because through Jesus we can all enjoy a new life. How fitting that this is the time of year that things come back to life. I love how God works!
Recipe of the Week (instead of your recipe for life what is it just for the week?)~My recipe for this week has been to stay on top of important things. I take Zoloft for anxiety and depression, but I haven't been taking my pills properly. This week all that came to a head, and I realized (yet again!!!) not to fight the medicine. I need to be thankful that it is out there, and recognize that taking this type of medicine doesn't mean I am weak.
Favorite Ingredients Friday
This Easter I decided that I would contribute the following side dish...
Glazed Baby Carrots
Ingredients
1 packet (1 oz.) Hidden Valley The Original Ranch Dressing Mix
1/4 cup each: butter and light brown sugar
1 package (16 oz.) ready-to-eat peeled baby carrots, cooked (boiled or steamed)
Directions
Melt butter and sugar in a large skillet. Add carrots and dressing mix; stir well. Cook over medium heat until hot and glazed; about 5 minutes. Makes 4 to 6 servings.
**Thoughts~I don't even like cooked carrots, but I love them cooked this way.**
I have also been asked to bring this side dish...
Broccoli Salad
Ingredients
  • 10 slices bacon
  • 1 head fresh broccoli, cut into bite size pieces
  • 1/4 cup red onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 3 tablespoons white wine vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 cup sunflower seeds
Directions
Place bacon in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium high heat until evenly brown. Drain, crumble and set aside.
In a medium bowl, combine the broccoli, onion and raisins. In a small bowl, whisk together the vinegar, sugar and mayonnaise. Pour over broccoli mixture, and toss until well mixed. Refrigerate for at least two hours.
Before serving, toss salad with crumbled bacon and sunflower seeds.
**Thoughts~My friend Betsy got me hooked on this recipe. It is very good. I usually serve it at Thanksgiving as one of my non-traditional sides.**
And if all goes well, I plan to bring this treat that I saw in Paula Deen Cooking magazine...
Chocolate Peanut Butter Eggs
Ingredients
1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/4 cup butter
3/4 cup confectioners' sugar
1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
1/2 cup finely chopped honey-roasted peanuts
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 (6-ounce) packages bittersweet baking chocolate, chopped
2 tablespoons butter-flavor shortening
Garnish: assorted candy melts, melted
Directions
In a microwave-safe bowl, microwave brown sugar and butter on high in 30-second intervals, stir between each, until brown sugar is melted (about 1 to 1 1/2 minutes total). Stir in confectioners' sugar, peanut butter, peanuts, and vanilla. Cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 1 hour.
Shape mixture by teaspoonfuls into egg shapes; refrigerate for 30 minutes.
In a small saucepan, melt chocolate and shortening over low heat, whisking until smooth. Cool slightly.
Using the tines of two forks, roll egg in chocolate to coat. Place chocolate eggs on parchment paper to dry. Drizzle with assorted candy melts, if desired (in fun colors).
Note: Chocolate-Covered Peanut Butter Eggs can be stored in an air tight container for up to 1 week.
Grilling Goodness
1. What's one of the best things you've seen lately? That would have to be trees blooming. I am ready for spring, and I can't figure out why ol' man winter keeps hanging around.
2. Has Spring brought you something you don't like? Not yet! It always brings me allergy problems, as well as a fun sinus infection, but I have been spared so far. I'm sure it will hit soon. Ugh!
3. What kind of sandwiches do you like? Let's see, I like egg-salad sandwiches, hot ham 'n cheese, grilled cheese, p b & j, Reuben sandwiches, and turkey clubs. I am sure there are a bunch more I like, but those are my top picks. Maybe it would be better to ask what kind I don't like! ;-)
4. Do you carry GermX with you at all times? Nope! I don't believe we need to be germ free all the time. I do think we should wash our hands regularly. I guess I figure people survived for years without killing every germ in sight, so maybe there is a reason we should keep some of them around. You never know!
5. Does each person in your house have their own hamper or do you have a central hamper for everyone? We just have a hamper on the laundry room, and everyone is expected to take their clothes there.
6. How often do you balance your checkbook? Not often enough lately. I used to balance everyday, because I worked at the bank as a teller. After I left that job, I would balance once a week, but now I go weeks without balancing. I know this isn't as long as some people go, but it is longer than I am comfortable with, and I actually plan to balance mine today.
7. What's the hardest thing you've done lately? I will have to say working out. I have never enjoyed exercise. I would actually avoid it at all cost. However, I am finding that it can be very rewarding and satisfying. It's hard work, and it is hard on my body at times, but it is well worth the pain.
8. Are you a texter? Nope! I am old school. Just call me please. ;-)
Friday Fill-Ins
1. Anonymous...if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. Well, at least find a way to criticize constructively. I know they say, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me," but that is just not true. Words do hurt, so please try to be more thoughtful with yours. Thank you!
2. My hubby is a very funny man. He keeps coming home with all kinds of silly jokes lately, and he makes me laugh. :-)
3. Let me embrace thee, sour adversity, for maybe I can learn something important.
4. Everything coming back to life is what I look forward to most about Spring.
5. Who needs therapy when you can just go shopping!!!
6. Chocolate MUST go into the Easter Basket!
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to hanging out at home with my kiddos watching The Chronicles of Narnia, tomorrow my plans include cleaning the nursery at church and Sunday, I want to go to Easter service at church, have Easter dinner at my sister-in-laws, and just having some good' ol fashion family time!
Thursday Thirteen~Letter K
13 Things About Me (& My Family) Beginning with the Letter 'K.'
1. Kites~My kids have never flown kites. I bought some several years ago, but we never got around to trying to fly them. Then this year my son won some in a basket raffle. I have to make that a priority! Doesn't flying a kite seem like something every kid should do at some point? I think it does.
2. Knives~My husband has way too many! Seriously, the man collects knives. He is truly an outdoorsy kind of guy. He even has a special knife sharpening system. I love when he puts that to good use and sharpens my kitchen knives. He rocks!
3. Karaoke~I love doing karaoke! It has been years though, but I am sure I would still have a good time making a fool of myself. I can't sing that great, but I absolutely love to sing, and the good thing is most people are drunk and don't care what you sound like.
4. Korea~Jeff lived in Korea for a bit back in his military days. He can actually say that he has been outside of our country, which is something that I can't say.
5. Kitchen~I would love to remodel our kitchen. Preferably within the next 6 years. Ours is very 70's, and it is in dire need of a face lift.
6. Kindergarten~When I was going to college for elementary education, our teachers asked what grade we would prefer to teach. I responded that I would like to teach anything but kindergarten. I said that I absolutely would not do that. I must have come across wrong, because I could tell that my teacher was a bit irked. She told me that I would take whatever job they hired me for. I wasn't trying to be a snot, but I know I don't have the patience to teach kids just beginning out in elementary school. I don't think it would be fair to give the kids a grumpy, stressed out teacher. Just trying to do the kids of America a favor! ;-)
7. Kerosene~In college, my roommate, Stacey, and I heated our home partially with a kerosene heater. It made the living room all cozy, as well as the walls a little black. It was kind of dangerous, but we were as safe as two crazy college kids could be.
8. Knocked Up~No, not that horrible movie with Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl. I was knocked up within the first month of our marriage. We said that we wouldn't use protection, and whenever God thought we were ready it would happen. Who knew it would be so quick! ;-)
9. Kiwi Fruit~My daughter, Ali, and I both like kiwi. It's high in fiber, which is good for both of us. We probably should eat it more than we do though. Yum! I think I will pick up some at the store.
10. Kiosk~I used to work in the mall at one of those center kiosks. Actually I worked at two different ones. The first one was Frontier Fruit & Nut Company, and the second one was Piercing Pagoda. It was crazy during Christmas time working right out there in the open amidst all the hustle and bustle.
11. Kielbasa~I know it probably isn't the healthiest thing to eat, but I love kielbasa. My husband isn't as big a fan as I am, but he puts up with it for my sake. We probably eat it twice a month. I try hard not to think about what is in it.
12. Ketchup~I know this might be weird, but I really like ketchup on macaroni and cheese. It is very tasty that way. Also, I used to always mix mayo and ketchup to dunk my fries in when I was eating out at Hardees. Is that gross?
13. Keyboard~My youngest daughter, Meghan, recently took 15 keys off of the keyboard on my laptop. I need to take that in and get it fixed. Two-year-olds sure can do some damage.
Join in on Thursday Thirteen, and don't forget to check back next week when I look at the letter 'L'...it should be a lovely time! ;-)
Swimsuits...Help!!
Okay, it is swimsuit shopping time. Not a time I look forward to at all, since I am about 60 pounds overweight. Ugh! However, it is something that I have to do, since Josh won that family pool pass for this summer. So, help me out, and please be gentle with your comments. I know I am fluffy, and I realize I am not going to look like a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model in ANY swimsuit. Just help me decide what you think would be best.
Since, I feel it is only fair to show you a picture of my fluffy self during this decision time, here is a recent picture of myself. I carry most of my weight in my midsection. Ugh!
I realize these pictures are small, but I couldn't enlarge them. I'm a techno-dummy. ;-) You can, however, click on them to go to the website where they not only have a full-size picture, but they also have a picture of the back.
Here are my thoughts...I think I need two swimsuits, since we will likely be at the pool a lot. So, do I just get a swim skirt with two different tops, or do I get one swim skirt, one top and one one-piece?
Do you like any of these? Help!!
The reason I posted two of the same above, is because I am debating between these colors, if I did go the one-piece route. I stink at picking out colors for myself. I have very fair skin, and I don't normally tan a ton. I also have very light eyes. They are a grayish-blue.
So, any advice? Please feel free to suggest something completely different. Just be kind in your suggestions. :-)
Birthdays In Heaven
Do you think birthdays are celebrated in heaven? Do you think they they celebrate the day you died instead, since that is your new birth? Hmmm? I obviously don't know the answers, but it helps me on a day like today to think that they do celebrate your birthday.
My father would have turned 63 today, but he passed away almost 3 years ago. He was a smart man, stubborn, and loving, though not in an overly sappy kind of way. I never doubted that he loved my mom, myself or my children.
Today, Dad, I hope you are up in heaven eating chocolate cake, with a bit of chocolate ice cream. I hope that you are aware of how much you are missed, but I pray that you know we are all okay because we know we will see you again one day. I long for the big hug you will give me when I step into heaven. Happy Birthday!
This picture was taken at Ali's 4th birthday party. This was the last family party that he attended, and he passed away about a month later.
Ten On Tuesday
10 Least Liked Foods
1. Sardines...I have never tried these, but they stink to high heaven. Ugh!
2. Spam...I probably tried this when I was little, but I don't really remember. I just can't past the layer of fat on top. Ewww!
3. Grapefruit...Has a bitter taste to me. I could never lose weight on the grapefruit diet. Darn it!
4. Beets...I used to gag on these when I was little, so now I won't even give them a try. They sure are a pretty color though.
5. Brussel Sprouts...Yuck!
6. Liver...There is just something about eating an internal organ. I actually used to like Braunschweiger when I was little, but then I found out what it was. There is no way I could eat that now.
7. Oysters...Never tried them, but they just look slimy and gross.
8. Sushi...Raw fish is not my idea of a good food.
9. Venison...Much to my husband's dismay!
10. Buffalo Wings...In general, I don't like to eat things on a bone.
Heads or Tails~List Three
The theme/prompt for today, April 7, is:
TAILS - "List Three"
So, here are three reasons I am looking forward to summer:
1. My mom bought my kids a new playset. It is being installed this Friday, as long as the weather is good, and it will look something like this.
One difference between the actual one we are getting and the one in the picture is that there will be a tunnel the kids have to climb through once they get to the top of the rock climbing wall. Fun! I never would have sprung for such a system, and I never desired a wood playset for my kids, but I am extremely grateful that my mom spoiled them with this because they will have so much fun.
2. Josh won us a family pass to the area pool at Ali's school carnival. Yahoo!! My husband won't partake in this, so I am going to add my mom, myself, and the three kids. We should have lots of fun hanging out in the water. Of course, I am not looking forward to buying a swimsuit, or being in one in front of others, but I know the pool pass will provide us with many fun family memories. That makes the swimsuit issue worthwhile. ;-)
3. I am also looking forward to enjoying our outdoor living spaces. This is how they looked last year...
However, this year I already got new cushions and an umbrella for the wrought iron set, and I am in the process of finding new cushions for our wicker furniture. So, it will be more cozy out there.
I love this area because in the evening Jeff and I can hang out there, look at the stars, and enjoy the warm summer air while we talk. Also, I will be able to sit out here and read while the kids are playing on the new playset. Or maybe I will hang out here with a friend while all of our kids play in my yard. Not to mention, this space will be used greatly during cookouts.
I can't wait for summer!!
Contentment
My mom and I are taking a finance class at our church, and a couple of weeks ago we talked about our part when it comes to finances. Our part is to be content with what God has given us, and to take good care of, be good stewards of, what He has given us. Well, this struck a nerve with me. I have not been very content with our home, and this talk got me to thinking about why.
This is our home...
It is a nice home. It has 5 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, a partial basement, which is the kid's playroom and is where the half bath is located. This home sits on a half acre in a nice, quiet, and well taken care of neighborhood. We are in a great school district, live within walking distance to a lake, and have a few friends that live in our neighborhood. We also have a large shed in our backyard, two great outdoor sitting areas, and we will soon have a big playset in our backyard.
So, why wouldn't I be content with all that? Is it because it isn't the best that is out there? Is it because the home didn't cost over $350,000? Nope! It's because we are not being good stewards, and I get completely frustrated and want to run to something new. See, when something breaks, it stays broken for quite some time. Let me give you some examples.
The kids' bathtub drain is broken. So, in order to keep water in the tub, you have to put a washcloth over the drain hole, and then put a big cup of water over the washcloth. You can't fill the tub up too high, because the cup will tip over, and you can't use the shower because water will go into this one area where it shouldn't. I can't explain that well. Anyway, guess how long the tub has been broken? At least 3.5 years would be my best guess. Frustrating!
How about this for frustrating? My closet broke last July. Check it out...
Yea, it is still broken. I now have a bunch of stuff thrown in that closet, as well as two racks set up in my room to hold Jeff's and my clothes. This stinks because my room is my sanctuary. I love for things to be neat and tidy in there, so that when I go to bed I can relax. However, that room never feels neat and tidy anymore.
Also, the door to our master bath has been broken for over a year. It is a pocket door, and during a "heated discussion", it got slammed. Now it is stuck inside the wall. I pray the neighbors can't see me taking a bath or going potty.
Oh, and remember that fireplace I mentioned? Well, it is a gas burning fireplace, and it shuts off after 5 minutes. We have never had it looked at, so we just never use the darn thing. We really want to have it converted to a wood burning fireplace, but as my husband says everything takes money. I am pretty sure we could have come up with a plan to pay for that in the almost 7 years we have lived here. Ugh!
Now check out the photo below.
Do you notice the leaning lamp post? Silly question! How could you not notice? Well this picture was taken last August, and that lamp post is no longer leaning. Nope! It is laying completely on the ground now. Of course, we bought a new lamp post four years ago this Mother's Day, so I am sure we will get that up soon.
Oh, I could go on and on. The closet in the laundry room that doesn't have shelves, the mold situation that we need to have checked out, the towel rack and toilet paper holder that have fallen off in the main bathroom and left big holes. You get the picture.
It's all of these things that get me stressed out and want to start from scratch. I had actually decided that I wanted to build this home.
But why would God give us a new home when we aren't even taking care of this one? Plus, if everything were up to par in this home, I wouldn't even be thinking about a new home. I love what our home could be with a little bit of love and attention. Plus, I love that we don't owe that much on our home. We are definitely living within our means. That is very important to me.
I know in writing all of this it sounds like I am bashing my husband. I'm really not! Jeff leaves home around 6:30 or 7 every morning, and he is rarely ever (translate as NEVER!) home before 7 at night. He works that schedule Monday through Saturday, and he usually works some hours on Sunday too. I don't think he ever works less than 80 hours a week. So, fixing all of this stuff isn't high on his priority list.
I just pray that Jeff and I can find a solution to being better stewards of our home. My solution would be to hire a handyman to help us get our home back in shape. Then when it is, we can make it a priority to keep it that way. I just don't think Jeff is willing to go this route. Please pray that we find a solution, because I feel very convicted to be content with what I have, as well as to be a good steward.
Gray Hair
Hi! My name is Dawn, and I have gray hair. I have been going gray for about 14 years now, and I am only 34 years old. I recently read an article about how scientists think they have figured out why we go gray. In the article it states, "But when there's a market as big as this one, especially in our youth-obsessed culture, no one doubts that the solution will be aggressively pursued, and we may soon have a choice about whether we want to go gray or not."
So, they are going to actively try to find a way to stop people from going gray. Seriously? Wouldn't their time be better spent on finding a cure for cancer, AIDS, juvenile diabetes, or even lupus. Shouldn't these things be what they are focusing on?
I know it is our culture that is prompting them to do this research. Why do people really care if they are gray? You can always get a new color out of a bottle. Problem solved! Now let's get back to curing things that take lives.
**Sorry! I will get off of my soap box now. Maybe this hit a nerve because I often have people tell me that I should color my hair, which I rarely do. I am told that it would make me look younger. By how much? A year or two? I mean for Pete's sake how old do I look anyway??? Okay, again I'm stepping down off of my soap box. Sorry again!**
Monday Morning Meme
1. How has the economic downturn affected your spending? Please share with us the lessons you’ve learned from this economic downturn. Tell us about one positive experience that has happened to you as a result of this economic disaster. Okay, I will admit that I live in a bubble, and I don't feel like the economic downturn has affected me as much as others. I spend the same as always, which isn't a good thing. I notice the change in the economy when I look at my mom's investments though, and it does stress me out a tad. One lesson I have learned is to be thankful for what we have, and to remember that in general Americans have far more than they actually need. We could survive on much less. The positive experience has been that I signed up for a finance class at church, and I am trying to get my spending under control....again.
2. What is your opinion on the death penalty? Let’s say the person is a serial killer and has admitted his/her guilt, and it is your job to sentence that person. Could you give that person the death penalty? Why or why not? I used to be all for the death penalty, but I now have a hard time with it. I feel like only God should get to decide when someone dies, and I don't think I would ever want to make that call. I also worry that we would be killing innocent people. Would we really only reserve the death penalty for those who admitted their guilt? If so, nobody would ever want to admit that they are guilty.
3. List five things you want your children (or your nieces/nephews if you don’t have children) to know before they grow up. I want them to know Jesus, I want them to know that their bodies are not something they should give away freely, and I want them to know that love is worth waiting for. I also want them to know that learning can be fun...not boring or a chore. Lastly, I want them to know that they can always count on me to be there for them.
4. You are given the power to kill people simply by thinking of their deaths and twice repeating the word “goodbye.” People would die a natural death and no one would suspect you. Are there any situations in which you would use this power? Absolutely not! I would want to get rid of this power immediately. It goes back to not wanting to take on God's role. Only He knows who sould live or die, and if a human were to possess this power it would most likely get abused and misused.
Food 4 Thought Friday
Breakfast~If you could live in any home on a television series, what would it be? I always thought the 7th Heaven home seemed welcoming and cozy. What do you think?
Lunch~What did you have for dinner last night (Thursday) ?~~I ate a bowl of chicken noodle soup at Culver's, and I had a small Pepsi with that tasty soup.
Dinner~If you had to be named after one of the 50 states, which would it be?~~Hmmmm??? I would have to choose Virginia. That is my Aunt's name, and I think it would be nice to be named after a beloved family member.
Midnight Snack~What is your favorite flower? I don't know that I have a favorite flowers, but I love wildflower types. Jeff used to pick Wild Sweet William and leave it on my front porch when we were dating.
Recipe of the Week (instead of your recipe for life what is it just for the week?)~~ Keep on keepin' on. I have worked out for three weeks now (three days a week), and this is a miracle in my book. I never stick with exercise this long. I plan to keep on keepin' on!!
Friday Fill-Ins
4. I like drinking ice cold water and relaxing a bit after I'm done working out or doing something strenuous.
5. Even in the most crowded of rooms I feel pretty comfortable.
6. A day with my three kiddos is a day fraught with peril, but it is also a day filled with tons of joy.
