I Love Sam's Club

Oh sure, buying in bulk is great because who really wants to run out of toilet paper, paper towels, or corn dogs. However, that isn't why I love Sam's. I love it because you can almost always fun stuff there....cool books, decorations for the house, fun toys. Here is what I found on my last trip to Sam's.

I got Meghan a winter coat and 2 pairs of jeans. Aren't they all adorable? The only problem is one of the pairs of jeans are the wrong size, so I will have to go back to Sam's. What a darn shame! ;-)

I found this fun houseplant. It's called a ponytail palm, and I fell in love with it right away. I especially love that the tag says this plant wants minimal attention, because that is about all I give my other plants.

Last, but not least, I found these really cool bowls. I honestly don't need any more bowls, but they are just so fun, and I couldn't stop myself. Can you say shopping addiction? The largest bowl is 6 quarts, and the smallest bowl is 8 ounces. I just know they will get tons of use throughout the years. Plus, they are made out of melamine, so they are likely to last forever.

Do you go to Sam's Club? Do you ever find cool things you can't pass up? Do tell!

Changing My Attitude

Today I was racing down I-74 doing 70 mph in a 55 mph zone. I had no reason to be in a hurry, since I had more than enough time to get to my doctor's appointment, but in a hurry I apparently was. Then all of a sudden a white PT Cruiser got in front of me in the left lane, and he or she was going what seemed insanely slow. My reaction? I instantly got angry as I pressed firmly on my brakes. I was saying a few not-so-nice things when out of the corner of my eye I spotted a police car sitting and waiting to pull someone over. It was right then that I realized this PT Cruiser actually did me a favor, and here I was acting like an idiot. Now I know the PT Cruiser person is completely unaware of how I acted, but does that really matter? God knows my reactions to things, and He matters far more than anyone or anything else. So, thank you kind person in the PT Cruiser. Thank you for keeping me from getting a ticket, and thank you for helping me see that I was behaving badly. I'll be working on changing my attitude!

Friday Fill-Ins

1. It's time for school to start, and I am beyond ready to be back on a schedule.

2. Chuck E. Cheese; it's not a bad place for kids, but it is a whole other story for parents. LOL!

3. I must be a little bit crazy! "Why?," you ask. "Too many reasons to count!," I say.

4. Jesus Christ is the best thing I have ever known. Does He count as a thing???

5. My guacamole is simply delicious, or at least I think so. ;-)

6. The last time I laughed really loudly was when I went with my friends, Danielle and Lisa, to see The Ugly Truth. That movie cracked me up!

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to relaxing at home with my kiddos, tomorrow my plans include probably working more on getting our garage sale ready, taking Ali to a birthday party, and possibly hanging out with Danielle and Lisa and Sunday, I want to go to church with my family and also go to a pool party!

Thursday Thirteen~Letter Q

13 Things About Me (& My Family) Beginning with the Letter 'Q.'

Okay folks, this is going to be a tough one, so bare with me. I'm not even sure I know 13 words that start with the letter 'Q.' LOL!

1. Quirky~Apparently I am quirky, but I don't think so. I like to eat everything with a fork (or spoon), so that I do not get my hands dirty....pizza, doughnuts, fried chicken, etc. My family thinks this is quirky, and my kids are always telling me that I can always wash my hands. It just grosses me out a tad to get them all dirty. I prefer to be clean. Okay, so maybe I am quirky!

2. Quatros~This is a restaurant in Carbondale, IL that I used to eat at quite often when I was in high school and college. It was mainly a pizza place, but they had other items too. I absolutely loved eating there on Monday night because you could get whole wheat crust. Yum!

3. Quake~As in earthquake, which is something I never thought I would experience, since I live in the midwest. When my parents moved me to southern Illinois my sophomore year of high school, I had no clue they were moving us near the New Madrid Fault Line. I remember feeling the school shake one morning, but I never in a million years would have guessed it was an earthquake. You actually could have convinced me of anything else...helicopter landing on our old and dinky roof, elephants running through the building....anything! I have only felt the quakes a couple of times, and it makes me grateful that I have never experienced a major one. I pray I never do!

4. Quit~I have never been fired from a job, but I have quit many. Actually, one time I was about to be fired for a ridiculous reason, and I quit instead. See, I was working at Steak 'N Shake as a prep person, and I had to be there at 5:30 in the morning. The problem was that it was Daylight Savings Time, and I had forgotten to adjust my clock. Totally innocent mistake! In all honesty, I was clueless that it actually was Daylight Savings. So, when I arrived at work at 5:30 am it was actually 6:30 am. My boss flipped out on me, since I was actually the first person to arrive for the morning shift. Several others were late too, and I presume they were late for the very same reason. Instead of being reasonable, my boss was yelling at me, and I basically told him he could take the job and shove it where the sun doesn't shine. I wasn't very nice about quitting, which I attribute to the fact that I don't tolerate being yelled at very well. Later that day my other boss called and tried to smooth things over, but being the stubborn, bullheaded person that I am, I refused to go back to work there. This ended my on-again/off-again working relationship with Steak 'N Shake. I still love to eat there, but I don't plan on working there again. Ever!

5. Queen~I have told Jeff before that I want to be treated like a Queen. I believe that in a marriage the husband should be treated like a King and the wife like a Queen. All this means, in my opinion, is that we often put the other person first, treat them like they are special, and make sure that they are happy. I need to be better about treating him like a King. I'm gonna work on that! ;-)

6. Quick Bread~I love quick breads. First of all, because they are so yummy, and second of all, because they are quick and easy. My favorites usually involve bananas. Here is a recipe I would love to give a try someday...

Honey-Sweet Banana-Nut Bread

2 eggs, beaten
4 ripe bananas, mashed
1 cup honey
2 tablespoons wheat germ
2 tablespoons orange juice
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
3 cups all-purpose flour
raisins and chopped walnuts (optional)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a medium bowl combine the eggs, bananas, and honey and stir to mix. Add the wheat germ and orange juice and mix well. In a large bowl combine the baking powder, baking soda, salt and flour. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until well blended. Stir in the raisins and walnuts, if desired.

Pour into two greased loaf pans. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until a tester inserted in the center comes clean.

A slice of this honey sweetened bread is extra good when spread with a little cream cheese.
**This recipe came from The Red Hat Society Cookbook.**

7. Quote~I like reading quotes. Mother Teresa had some of the best quotes. Here are two of hers I love..."If you judge people, you have no time to love them." and "Love begins at home, and it is not how much we do... but how much love we put in that action." Aren't those great? Do you have a favorite quote?

8. Quiche~Here is a quiche recipe that I have made. We all enjoyed this tasty meal.

Bacon and Swiss Quiche

Ingredients

1 (9-inch) frozen pie crust, thawed
1 pound sliced bacon
3 eggs, lightly beaten
1 (12 ounce) can evaporated milk
1/2 teaspoon spicy brown mustard
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 cup all-purpose flour, or as needed
1-1/2 cups shredded Swiss cheese

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prick bottom and sides of pie crust and bake 10 minutes, until lightly brown; set aside to cool.

Place bacon in a skillet over medium-high heat and cook until evenly brown. Drain, crumble and set aside.

In a bowl, mix eggs, milk, mustard and nutmeg. In a separate bowl, toss bacon with flour to lightly coat. Spread 3/4 bacon mixture and Swiss cheese over bottom of pie crust. Pour egg mixture over bacon mixture. Top with remaining bacon mixture.

Bake 1 hour until knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes before cutting to serve.

Yields 8 servings
9. Queue~Our family has an account with Netflix, and next in our Netflix queue is The Hanuted Mansion. This movie was put in our queue at the request of my oldest, Ali. She has seen it before and wants to see it again.

10. Quiet~It is never, ever quiet at my house, and if it is, I know that someone is getting into trouble. It's a given!

11. Quiver~A quiver is a case for holding or carrying arrows. Jeff loves bow hunting, but that is not how I know about quivers. In high school, we had archery in our PE class. It was actually during archery that my PE teacher said I would be lucky to make it on to the next grade. Looking back, I think I was way too much of a pain in the rump, so I can see why she was a bit snippy with me.

12. Quality~I like quality items, and I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for. That does not mean that I think all high priced items are quality, but it does mean that I think high quality items are going to cost a bit more than items of poor quality.

13. Quilts~Jeff's grandma makes quilts, and she made one for Josh and gave it to him last Christmas. He was thrilled, which I think tickled her pink. I believe Ali and Meghan are both getting quilts this Christmas. I love knowing that they will all have a special handmade gift from Grandma Rose. Here is Josh's quilt...

Do you see that patch up in the corner? Here is a closer picture...

January 7th is Josh's birthday, and 2006 is the year that the top part of the quilt was made. Isn't this just a precious gift? I hope he cherishes it for many, many years.

Well, I made it through the letter Q, but I will say it was a struggle. Thanks for hanging in there! :-)

Join in on Thursday Thirteen, and don't forget to check back next week, when I look at the letter 'R'...it should be a radical time! ;-)

Once-A-Month Cooking

I love the idea of being organized. I say idea because I never seem to be able to actually be organized. I am always seeking out books and blogs that will help me be a better homemaker.

So, the idea of once-a-month cooking intrigues me. What is not to love about having meals in the freezer ready to pull out on a busy or stressful day? One has to be pretty organized to pull that off right? Well, I can't fathom actually putting a whole months worth of meals in the freezer, but what I can do is put a few meals in the freezer. In the past, I have gotten together with friends so that we each put at least 12 meals in our freezer. Gotta love that!

I recently checked out this book from the library...

Here are a few recipes that I found in this book and hope to put in my freezer soon.

Wild Rice Chicken

1 6 1/4 ounce package quick-cooking long grain and wild rice
1 cup cooked, chopped chicken
1 8-ounce can sliced water chestnuts, drained
1 cup finely chopped celery
1 1/4 cups finely chopped onion
1 cup light mayonnaise
1 10 3/4 ounce can condensed cream of mushroom soup

Cook rice according to package directions. Combine rice with chopped chicken, water chestnuts, celery and onion; put mixture in 1-gallon freezer bag.

To prepare for serving, thaw rice and chicken mixture, remove from bag, and place in a 2 1/2-quart baking dish. Stir mayonnaise and condensed cream of mushroom soup together, and spread over top of chicken. Bake covered in a preheated 325 degree oven for 1 hour.

Makes 6 servings

Serve with: cooked green beans, peach halves with cottage cheese

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Deborah's Sweet and Sour Chicken
1/2 cup sugar
3 tablespoons cornstarch
1/2 cup white vinegar
1 8-ounce can pineapple chunks (reserve juice)
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon minced garlic (1 clove)
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1 cup coarsely chopped celery
1 cup coarsely chopped onion
3 cups cooked, diced chicken
1 cup coarsely chopped green bell pepper
1 4-ounce can mushroom stems and pieces, drained
1 8-ounce can sliced water chestnuts, drained
2 cups regular, uncooked rice
In a medium saucepan, combine sugar and cornstarch; stir in white vinegar, juice from pineapple chunks, soy sauce, salt, garlic, paprika, ginger, celery and onion. Bring to a boil; reduce heat. Simmer, stirring constantly until thickened. Remove from heat. Stir in pineapple chunks, chicken, bell pepper, mushrooms and wter chestnuts. Put in an 8-cup container and freeze.
To prepare for serving, thaw chicken and put in a baking dish treated with nonstick cooking spray. Bake uncovered in a preheated 350 degree oven for 45 minutes. Prepare rice according to package directions. Serve chicken over rice.
Makes 8 servings
Serve with: Tossed green salad, dinner rolls
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Manicotti

1 8-ounce package manicotti
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 15-ounce carton part-skim ricotta cheese
1 16-ounce carton low fat cottage cheese
1 cup grated mozzarella cheese
1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
2 eggs
2 1/2 cups spaghetti sauce

Boil manicotti according to package directions, adding oil to water so they won't stick together. Meanshile, mix ricotta cheese, cottage cheese, mozzarella cheese and Parmesan cheeses, salt, pepper, parsley and eggs.

Drain manicotti; run cold water over it. Stuff each manicotti with cheese mixture. Place them in a 3-quart casserole, and pour sauce around stuffed manicotti. Cover dish with foil and freeze.

To prepare for serving, thaw dish. Bake uncovered in a preheated 350 degree oven for 45 minutes. Uncover and bake for 15 minutes more.

Makes 8 servings

Serve with: spinach salad

There you have them. Three recipes that I think sound pretty tasty and can be made ahead of time and frozen. Rock on! Do they sound good to you? Do you like to freeze meals? If so, what are some recipes that you freeze? Please share!! :-)

Heads Or Tails

The theme/prompt for THIS week is:

TAILS - "In Five Years"

In five years, Jeff and I will have been married for 13 years. Ali will be 12, Josh will be 10, and Meghan will be 7. I see my life being easier because the kids can do more for themselves, and they will be able to help out around the house more with chores. I see myself either working at a local school as a teachers aide or volunteering more at the kids' school. Most likely I will be volunteering more.

Of course, I also see my life being busier. The kids will be in more activities, and they will have more of a social life. This means that I will be running much more.

I will still have the great group of girlfriends that I have, but all of these relationships will have strengthened and grown deeper.

We will be living in the same house, but we will have fixed it up quite a bit. Actually, all the things that I want done will be done in five years...remodel kitchen, dining room, main bathroom, and then some. A girl can dream! ;-)

Since I am dreaming, in five years, Jeff will have gotten rid of one company and only have two. Or maybe, just maybe, he will have gotten rid of two companies and be down to one. Whichever one he continues to have will be even more successful than it already is because my hubby is one brilliant man! Hopefully he will have more free time to do more family things like eat dinner together a few times a week, go on family vacations, and hang out around the house with the me and the kids.

That is my life in five years. Pretty much the same...only better! :-)

Food 4 Thought Friday

Breakfast~What is something that you still want to squeeze in this summer that you haven't yet? I actually want to take my kids to the city pool. Josh won us a family pool pass, and we haven't used it once.

Lunch~What happened this week that was unique from the rest? I actually did some laundry! Nah seriously, I got to go with friends to a Lia Sophia Extravaganza, and I also got to go with my kids and my friend Karen's family to a water park. Lots of fun!

Dinner~Where were you born? What is something unique about this city? I was born in Toledo, Ohio, but I only lived in Ohio for the first 5 years of my life. I had to research the city to find out some unique facts. Here they are...

  • Toledo was built on a swamp and used to be referred to as “frogtown.”
  • Toledo was once located in Michigan, but became part of Ohio after the Ohio/Michigan War. (1836)
  • Toledo’s Historic Old West End has the largest collection of Victorian homes east of the Mississippi.Midnight Snack~Where would you like to be right at this moment?
Midnight Snack~Where would you like to be right at this moment? Anywhere that kids are not yelling! If they could just get along, life would be far more enjoyable!!!

Recipe of the week (Instead of your recipe for life, what is is just for this week?) Just do it!

Friday Fill-Ins

1. Americas economic situation is not the end of the world. It does stink though!

2. Sitting here, listening to the sound of rain falling, I just want to take a nice long nap.

3. Guacamole with Hint of Lime Tortilla Chips tastes so good!

4. Sometimes, putting others first is really hard. I can be a bit selfish.

5. The world is breathtaking, really. God did an amazing job!

6. Well, maybe there is something I should be doing instead of blogging, but I guarantee that something isn't nearly as much fun. :-)

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to hanging out at home with my family, tomorrow my plans include hanging out some more and Sunday, I want to go to church and grill out at home with the family! We actually have a low key weekend, and I am going to enjoy!

I Am In Love!

I am in love with the greatest thing since sliced bread. Seriously! I am in love with Whole Grain White Arnold Sandwich Thins.

Have you tried them? They taste just like white bread! They are delicious, and my kids will even eat them. That is saying something. They are 100 calories (for two pieces), 1 gram of fat, and 5 grams of fiber.

Now I am on the hunt for the Arnold Country White bread.

Have you tried this bread? I am just curious to see what the nutritional label is like compared to the white bread we currently eat, which is usually Wonder. Plus, I want to know if it tastes as good as the Whole Grain White Sandwich Thins.

So, how about you? Any products you have found lately that you absolutely love? Do tell!

Thursday Thirteen~Letter P

13 Things About Me (& My Family) Beginning with the Letter 'P.'

1. Pox~As in Chicken Pox. I have never had them, nor have my children. When I was pregnant, I had a chicken pox scare with one of my students, so my doctor checked to see if I was hopefully immune. I wasn't immune, but my student thankfully didn't have the pox. I pray I never get them!

2. Paducah, KY~This is the city where one of my dearest and bestest friends lives. (Bestest is to a word spell checker! It's my kind of word.) Sadly I haven't seen Betsy since March of 2008, and we have no visit in sight. :-( She and I used to drive to Paducah when we were younger to eat at El Chicos and wander around their mall. Those were the days. Now she lives there with her hubby and daughter. Here is a picture of Betsy and I back in the day. This photo was taken at our Homecoming Dance in 1990...
Here is a picture of our daughters together during the March 2008 visit...
Okay, so you can't see Norie's beautiful face, but isn't that just a sweet picture? I just know Meg & Norie would be great friends, if we didn't live 5 hours apart.

3. Pet~We don't have any pets, and lately I have been thinking about getting a dog. I keep changing my mind though because I am worried that it will pee and poo in my house, smell up my home, or shed like crazy. It would be great for the kids to have a pet, but it probably wouldn't be as great for me since I already have three kids and a hubby to pick up after. I guess I am just not ready to make that committment yet.

4. Piercing Pagoda~During my college years I worked at a Piercing Pagoda during the Christmas season. Betsy's sister, Dana, managed the place, and she was always kind enough to hire me. Thankfully I never actually had to pierce anyone's ears, since I think I might have passed out during the process.

When Ali turned 5, she wanted her ears pierced, and where do you think I took her? To our local Piercing Pagoda! Here are a couple of pics of her after she got them done...

Two years later she still loves that she has them pierced!

5. Pale~I am probably one of the whitest Caucasian people around. Seriously! I often joke that I am so white I glow in the dark, especially my legs. I don't tan well, so I quit trying. I have learned to embrace my paleness, but for years I detested my color. I definitely feel that I would have fit better in an era where tanning wasn't so popular. Darn the luck!

6. Pajamas~My mother-in-law, Ruth, makes pajamas for her grandkids. I don't know about the other grandkids, but I know that Josh & Ali have absolutely loved the ones she has made them in the past. It all started with these pairs she made when Josh was 2...

They were pretty big on Josh, and he wore them until they could have been called capris. Oh, and the shirt became a major belly shirt, but he would choose to wear those over his other jammies quite often. Ali actually still wears the pair above even though they are 5 years old. It is just a small nightgown, instead of a floor length nightgown. LOL!

Thankfully for Christmas Grandma made all the kids (minus Meghan because she wasn't at a size where she could wear them long) new jammies. They were thrilled! Ali got to pick out her fabric, pattern and buttons, so she felt pretty special.

Josh got race cars, since he loves anything that has 4 wheels.

They wore their new jammies right away!

I know it is a lot of work for grandma to do this, but her hard work is very much appreciated by the kids...and their mom.

7. Pineapple~Ali has what is known as 'geographic tongue' and pineapple is about the only thing we have found that bothers her tongue. Unscientifically speaking, geographic tongue is basically where your tongue has red patches on it that resemble a map, and those areas are bare of the bumps that contain your taste buds. She still tastes perfectly fine, but the acidic level in pineapple irritates that bare area. Only 3% of the general population have geographic tongue. I always knew my Ali was unique!

8. Pierogies~I absolutely love pierogies. I think they taste the best fried up in some butter with a little sour cream for dipping. Yummy!

9. Pumpkin~The kids attend school in the "Pumpkin Capital of the World." The town is home to Libby's Pumpkin plant and a Pumpkin Festival. Last year Ali & I marched in the Pumpkin Festival Parade with the Girl Scouts.

10. Prayer~I believe that God does indeed answer prayers! I need to be better about getting more prayer time into my life. In my ideal world, I would be a morning person that wakes up an hour before my kids, which would be about 5:30, and has my quiet time then. Sadly, my world is not ideal.

11. Pie~A while back, I went over to my friend Tammy's house and we had a good time baking a strawberry-rhubarb pie. She taught me how to make pie crust. It is pretty easy. I wonder why I was intimidated for so long. Silly me! After our pie baking session, I went out and bought this book called 'Pie: 300 Tried-and-True Recipes for Delicious Homemade Pie.'

This book seriously has some yummy sounding recipes! While I can't say that I have actually tried any of them yet, I can say that I have baked a pie with homemade crust.

12. Purse~I have recently developed a love for purses. I would love to find one in a pale blue. I'm on the hunt!

13. Pens~My husband, Jeff, will only use pens with black ink. Apparently this is a quirk he picked up from the military. I, on the other hand, love all colors. The more colors the merrier!

Join in on Thursday Thirteen, and don't forget to check back next week, when I look at the letter 'Q'...it should be quite interesting! ;-)

Lia Sophia Extravaganza

Last night I had a fabulous time attending a Lia Sophia Jewelry Extravaganza with my friends Jacquie, Laura, Deidre, and Bev. Had the night ended after the car ride to the Extravaganza in Bloomington it still would have been a great night, since we laughed so much that it hurt at times. Of course, had it ended then, I wouldn't have come home with some new jewelry.

When we arrived, there was a Lia Sophia box at our spot. We all opened up our pieces to see what we had gotten. This was what I saw...

I love it!

The whole night is basically just one big giveaway. You buy raffle tickets when you enter. Plus, you play BINGO to win items. Our table was probably one of the luckiest and loudest. We were having a great time! Jacquie and her sister, Bev, are probably the two luckiest darn people I have ever met. They were winning things like crazy. Laura and Deidre each won something. Actually, there was only one person at our table of eight that did not win something, but at least she walked away with one piece of jewlery.

I won a necklace playing BINGO, and then later one of my raffle tickets won a bracelet. I was super excited when I realized the two matched. How cool (and lucky) was that?!?! I absolutely adore them, since they are blue, which is my favorite color. Check them out...

The car ride home from the show was just as enjoyable as the car ride there. Once we arrived back in Morton, Deidre, Jacquie and I went to Steak 'N Shake to talk and eat some yummy food. This night has confirmed for me that women need meaningful, Christian relationships with other women. I am truly a blessed woman! Lately I have felt God putting it on my heart to get women of faith together, and I pray that He will help me see how I can do this best.

All in all, it was a great night, and I look forward to doing it again in January. Who knows what I might come home with then! ;-)

Heads or Tails

The theme/prompt for this week is:

HEADS - Wear
*OR*
TAILS - Where

I am going to go with where thanks to a suggestion Skittles had. :-)

Do you all remember that pile I showed you during last weeks Heads or Tails? It was my office, which was a really huge pile! Pile of poo that is! Well, this week the pile is gone. Where has it gone you ask? Mostly in the garbage but some of it just needed to be put in its proper place. Check it out...

Much better, eh? I feel like I can think in here again. Yahoo!! For the longest time I didn't want to be in this room, but now it is where you will find me, if you need me. ;-)

My Sister's Keeper

Last night I went with two friends, Karen and Sarah, to see My Sister's Keeper. I never read the book, so I can't debate which was better. However, if I had to guess, I would say the book was probably better, since books are almost always better, in my opinion. Not at all because the movie was bad.

This movie was wonderful actually. My heart went out to the mom who just wanted her daughter to be well. My heart also went out to the poor daughter that was being put through the wringer to try and help save her sister. I also felt terrible, obviously, for the poor girl with cancer, as well as the brother who is painfully neglected. I cried so much during this movie that I left feeling purged of many toxins. So cleansing!

Have you seen this movie? If so, what did you think? If not, is it a movie you hope to see in the future? Do tell!

Food 4 Thought Friday

Breakfast~what is looming on your to do list right now? What isn't??? Clean my office, dust my house, go workout, go to the city pool with my kiddos (we haven't used our pool pass yet this summer), get organized....I could go on!

Lunch~what was your life like this week? Well, we had just gotten back from vacation, so it took me some time to get back into the swing of things. Plus, I believe I am battling PMS right now, since I was a "tad" bit moody. Just a tad I tell you! I was also very blessed this week, because I got to order a new front door and screen door. I detest the one we have had for the last 7 years. The screen door screams 70's, and the front door howls when it is too windy. All in all, it has been a pretty decent week.

Dinner~What is a fear you currently have? Honestly? I am afraid that all the stuff my hubby needs to do around this house won't get done, and I fear he will never hire someone to do the stuff that he can't (or won't) do. Jeffrey is a great man, but he is very much work focused. What is a woman to do???

Midnight Snack~When was the last time you took time for yourself? I'm taking time for myself right now. I take time for myself quite often otherwise I will go nuts. Tonight I get to go out with the girls to see My Sister's Keeper. Me time makes me a better mom. Maybe I need more me time! ;-)

Recipe of the Week (instead of your recipe for life, what is it just for this week?) Keep on keeping on!

Friday Fill-Ins

1. Calling Pizza Hut and answering the door when the delivery driver arrives make a quick and easy dinner. LOL!

2.To Kill a Mockingbird is the book I'm (supposed to be) reading right now. I just can't seem to get into the darn book. I will though. I will! Sorry, I'm just trying to convince myself. ;-)

3. July brings back memories of all my birthday pasts. There was my smurf birthday party, the party where my dad took me and my friends sailing, and who can forget my 30th birthday? My parents threw me a party at Famous Dave's down on the river. Great time!

4. The fact that there is a God was obvious. Just look around you. He is everywhere!

5. They say if you tell your dreams to someone you will have a better chance of remembering them. Actually, I have no idea if that is true, but it sounds good.

6. I told my hubby that I wanted to build a new house and he needed to think it over. It took him 2.2 seconds to decide that we wouldn't be doing that any time soon. What a drag! How did I marry such a dream buster? Nah, I am kidding. I am so thankful that he is more grounded than myself. If he weren't, we would be way over our heads in debt. I love my frugal hubby!

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to going to see My Sister's Keeper with some friends, tomorrow my plans include hanging out at my house and Sunday, I want to go to church with my youngest while my hubby takes the two older ones to the drag races!

Thursday Thirteen~Letter O

13 Things About Me (& My Family) Beginning with the Letter 'O.'

1. Occupation~
I am currently a stay-at-home mom/housewife. I am comfortable with both terms. I hope to someday be a housewife that works as a teacher's aide at one of our local grade schools. I have my degree in Elementary Education, but I can't ever see myself working full time unless finances get really tight because I want my focus to be on my family.

2. Owl~I recently had a dream where an owl was flying around my house. It later flew out into my garage, and the garage door closed on it and killed the owl. Weird right? According to dreammoods.com
"To see a dead owl, signifies a narrow escape from desperate illness and death. Death in this sense may also represent a symbolic death, as in an important transition in life." Hmmmmm??? I'm pretty sure there is a meaning behind this dream, but I'm still not 100% sure what it is. Heck, I'm not even 10% sure. ;-)

3. Ohio~I was born in Ohio, and I lived there for the first 5 years of my life. We still have family there, and we recently went back for a visit.

4. Orchestra~I played the violin in the orchestra when I was younger. While I showed some talent, this activity was short lived. I would love to take violin lessons again someday.

5. Opera~My minor was theater in college, and I often had to go see different plays for classes. One that I had to attend was an opera, and Jeff agreed to go with me. It was a very painful experience for both of us. I'm not convinced all operas would be that painful, but I am also not willing to try again just in case I'm wrong.

6. Ophthalmologist~I recently took my son, Josh, to see a pediatric ophthalmologist who informed us that he didn't need to be wearing glasses. He has been wearing his for a little over a year. We have ordered his files from our old eye doctor to see if they unnecessarily prescribed them or to see if his eyesight has gotten better in that time. I'm betting they prescribed them without cause, which makes me wonder about my little Meghan. Time to get her in to see the pediatric ophthalmologist. They sure were cute in their glasses though!

Here was Josh back when he got his glasses...

Here is Meghan with her big sister, Ali.

7. October~This is my absolutely favorite month. I love it because the weather gets cooler, the leaves change colors, and the air feels crisp and smells delightful. It's a time for beautiful mum flowers, and it is also the time for visiting the apple orchard and pumpkin patch. We drive north for our annual family weenie roast around the middle of October, which is a highlight for all of us. Of course, we can't forget that October is the time for Halloween. It is just a fun filled month! Here are some pics from my kids last October.

Here is Josh getting ready to ride the barrel train at the apple orchard.
Here is Ali, Josh and I standing in front of a crazy mirror at the apple orchard.
The past two Octobers we have visited friends at a local campground for a Halloween night. Here is Ali with her friend, Madison, and Josh enjoying the campfire.
Spoon River Drive is over two weekends in October, and it is a time to drive around to see beautiful scenery, as well as enjoy the tents of food and fun goodies for sale. Here are Ali and Jeff at a food booth during last years Spoon River Drive.
Here are all three of them on Halloween night. They got a ton of candy!
Here is Meghan with her Aunt Angie at the annual family weenie roast.
Ali enjoyed roasting and eating marshmallows at the annual family weenie roast. So much fun!
October rocks!

8. Onion~I absolutely love onions! White, yellow, red, green, sweet...you name it, I love it! They add so much flavor to food, and I can't imagine not cooking with them.

9. Oasis~We lived in Wisconsin for a good part of my childhood, and we would often travel to see family in Ohio and Illinois. I can't even tell you how many times we stopped at the Janesville (WI) oasis, which was home to a very large cow. I say was because the oasis is apparently gone, but Bessie the cow has survived...so far. Here is a picture of us with Bessie from our honeymoon.

10. Okra~
Fried okra is yummy, but it isn't something that I normally make at home. Whenever I think of fried okra, I fondly think of Lambert's Cafe in Sikeston, MO. This unique restaurant is the only home of throwed rolls. When I was in college, my roommate and I decided to drive there for dinner. It was an hour and a half drive, and I was apparently trying to get there in record time, but all I wound up doing was getting a speeding ticket. Ugh!

11. Odometer~I have always have used cars, which is perfectly fine by me. However, this last time we bought a vehicle it was a 2006 Kia Sedona, and the odometer only read '7'. It is kind of nice to know that I have been the one to put the miles on this vehicle. I only wish there weren't so many!

12. Organic~It seems like everything is organic these days, and I am sure I should be better about buying organic, but to be honest I rarely ever do. I don't know what my problem is, but the word organic is a turnoff to me. I like what it stands for, but the word itself just triggers negative feelings for me. I know I am odd!

13.
Ocean~I have only been to the ocean once, and I actually don't remember it very well. I hope to take my kids to see an ocean someday. Maybe we will get to visit St. Thomas or Tybee Island, which my friend Betsy tells me is wonderful.

Join in on Thursday Thirteen, and don't forget to check back next week, when I look at the letter 'P'...it should be a perfectly good time! ;-)

Back From Vacation

Okay, we have been back from vacation for 3 days now, and I think I am finally rested up. I didn't think this trip would wear me out, since it was going to be so low key, but any trip with three young kids is exhausting! Am I right? You know I am! ;-)

We went to Toledo, Ohio to visit my mom's side of the family. We arrived on Thursday the 9th, and the very first thing we did was jump in my Aunt and Uncle's pool. Very refreshing (and cold) after a long drive. Of course, I needed the water to make me feel clean.

You see on our drive we were heading through the Chicago area traffic and Josh kept complaining that he had to go to the bathroom. My mom was driving, and she wasn't able to pull over any time soon. So, I took my large McDonald's cup to the back and had Josh pee in the cup. He was a little unsure of this idea, but I reassured him it would be fine. Was I wrong! My mom had to hit the brakes, and she says she told me to brace myself, but I missed that warning completely. So, the cup and I flew towards the front, and Josh kept peeing. He wound up peeing on me. Ugh! I cleaned myself up with wipes, but I still didn't feel fresh. The chlorinated water took care of that, as well as helped relax my body. We need a pool!

After our swim, we went out to dinner at The Barn Restaurant, which is located in Archbold, Ohio. It is right outside the historic Sauder village. The food was very tasty. It was a buffet, and I had a fajita, mashed potatoes, bread pudding, salad, and cream of mushroom soup. Yum! Next time I hope we will get there early enough to walk through the historic village too.

Friday morning Aunt Cathy and Uncle Rodger took us to Grand Rapids, which is the town that my mom, dad and I lived in before we left Ohio when I was 5. We drove around trying to find our old home, but we had no luck. The problem was that none of us remembered what street we lived on back then. After driving around, we walked through some of the shops downtown. I was very excited to find a coobook put together by the American Legion ladies in Grand Rapids. It's the little things in life!

Once we were done there, we dropped my Aunt Cathy and Uncle Rodger back off at home, and we went to visit my Aunt Barb, cousin Barbie, and cousin Angel and her three girls. I can't even remember the last time I saw my Aunt Barb and Barbie, and I had never met Angel or her girls. My kids got along great with her girls, and I learned that I have quite a bit in common with Angle...we both have three kids, like to cook, and struggle to keep our homes as clean as we would like. ;-)

Here is a picture of Angel's and my kids together. From left to right we have Meghan (with her lip whistle Angel gave her), Mary Jane, Abby, Buggy (which is obviously her nickname), Ali & Josh. When we were leaving my kids kept saying, "Bye Buggy! I love you Buggy!" It was sweet!

While we were visiting, I spotted this really cool plant arrangement hanging from Angel's front porch. Her husband made it for her out of a large shephards hook and terra cotta pots. I am so going to do that next year! Such a unique idea.

Friday night was a fun night. My mom, Aunt Cathy, cousin Cindy, and I all went out to bingo. We split our winnings between the four of us, so we each walked away with $15. Of course, Cindy and I only mentioned about 20 times that we were the only two to actually call bingo that night. We wouldn't want to hold it over their heads too much. LOL!

On the way home from bingo somebody tooted, I can't even remember who, and we all were laughing so hard. I didn't even know bodily functions could be that funny. I had to pull the car over because I was laughing so hard. I couldn't see the road, and I am only slightly embarrassed to say that I dribbled a bit in my pants. Once the laughter subsided, I started driving towards their home, and this is what we found when we got there...

They were all sacked out. Aren't they just precious?

The next day we ventured out to...

This is a fabulous zoo! Way cooler than our local zoo. Here are some pics from our day.

My mom and her sister, Cathy, had way too much fun. They are a hoot!

Okay, call me a dork. I don't care. I had to take this picture because I never knew a zoo would have such good food. I thoroughly enjoyed my Blue Cheese and Bacon Burger. Oh, and the chips and salsa they brought out was fantastic. The salsa had almost too much heat for me, but I was not complaining.

Doesn't Josh look thrilled to be a butterfly? Love it!

He is much happier here being a more "masculine" animal. Silly kid!

Ali liked pretending she had a bird on her shoulder. She is a hoot!

The zoo has a new kid area, and in that area is this cool stream. I fought the urge to take off my shoes and walk through it too.

Inside the "forest" we found a huge honeycomb, trees that we could talk through, an ant tube, and this spider web. Notice the little boy that I couldn't crop out of the photo. I think he was a little miffed that he had to wait until we were done. I promise we didn't take super long!

Next to the "forest" was the "home." My kids crawled through the doggy door to get into the house. Very fun! I didn't have to fight the urge to try that. I was too afraid I would get stuck LOL! Here I am giving Ali a big ol' smooch on her cheek while we chill for a bit.

They also have a small goat petting area. I was surprised my kids weren't more freaked out by this, since it took Josh and Meghan days to warm up to my Aunt Cathy & Uncle Rodger's dog, Molly.

While we were in the zoo, we went into the Toledo Museum of Science building. There were some really creepy bugs in there. I was fascinated by this one water bug though because it swam like a turtle. Quite cool!

I just love this picture of Meghan hammin' it up with the T-Rex replica in the museum. She is such a ham bone!

After the zoo, as well as all the next day, we were fish. We swam in the pool, played in the hot tub, and we even had a hobo dinner. That is where you boil a pot of water outside and add ham, kielbasa, cabbage, onions, carrots, and potatoes. Usually everyone that comes to the shindig brings one of those items. It is very tasty, and it is something that you can munch on from early afternoon to late at night. Of course, you will also end up gassy from the cabbage. Trust me on this!

Here are Josh and I enjoying the hot tub.

Aren't my girls cuties?

I absolutely love this picture of all three of my kiddos. I want to frame this somewhere in my home.

Ali was enjoying being flipped off a raft by her cousin, Corey. Good times! My cousin, Cindy, brought her goddaughter, Maya, over. Maya and Ali took turns getting flipped. They were lovin' this.

Josh found a car that he was way to big for, but he insisted on playing with it anyway. The boy loves anything on wheels! Meghan was enjoying riding the bike.

She also got a turn in the car too. It was just her size!

We left Toledo on Sunday morning. It was a great trip, but I admit I was ready to get back to our routine. I got to do some shopping on the way home, so that made the trip back pretty enjoyable for me. I didn't even get peed on! ;-)

Heads or Tails

The theme/prompt for THIS week is:

HEADS - "Pile"

My office is one big pile. It's not a neat and tidy pile. It's a pile of poo!
Check it out...

If you know me at all or have ever been in my home (or seen pictures), you know that this room is not the norm. This room is hideous! I am embarrassed to post these pictures, but I try to be as real as I can on this blog. This is 100% real folks! I am really going to try to get this room clean by next Heads or Tails Tuesday. Check back to see if the pile got cleaned up. ;-)
